LOS ANGELES – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai met with Japan's Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Nishimura Yasutoshi today, following the conclusion of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial meeting in Los Angeles. Ambassador Tai and Minister Nishimura welcomed the successful outcome of the ministerial meeting and discussed further ways to help advance a smooth negotiation with strong outcomes for all IPEF member countries.
The Ministers also discussed a broad range of other issues of common interest, including ongoing efforts to partner together to help eradicate the use of forced labor in the production of goods in supply chains and to address non-market policies and practices of third countries. They also agreed to work closely together to help advance successful outcomes for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which the United States will host in 2023, and the G7, which Japan will host in 2023. The Ministers affirmed the roles of our bilateral engagement under the U.S.-Japan Partnership on Trade and the U.S.-Japan-EU Trilateral initiative as contributing substantially to these and other efforts.
Noting Japan's special consumer incentives for fuel cell vehicles, Ambassador Tai also highlighted the importance of the Inflation Reduction Act as a key tool for the United States to take meaningful action on clean energy technologies, such as for electric vehicles, to combat the climate crisis while addressing supply chain and security vulnerabilities.
