On January 12, 2018, Australia requested consultations with Canada concerning measures maintained by the Canadian Government and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia governing the sale of wine. Australia’s request for consultations followed earlier requests for consultations submitted by the United States (DS520 and DS531) pertaining to measures maintained by the Canadian province of British Columbia governing the sale of wine in grocery stores.

Australia claimed that the measures appear to be inconsistent with:

On September 14, 2016, Ukraine requested consultations with Russia regarding alleged restrictions on traffic in transit from Ukraine through the Russian Federation to third countries.

Ukraine claims that the measures are inconsistent with:

• Articles V:2, V:3, V:4, V:5, X:1, X:2, X:3(a), XI:1, and XVI:4 of the GATT 1994; and

• Paragraph 2 of Russia’s Accession Protocol.

On September 29, 2016, the European Union requested to join the consultations.

Washington, DC – The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative today announced that the United States signed the Arrangement on Information Exchange, Technical Cooperation and Counterfeiting at a meeting of the World Wine Trade Group (WWTG) in Brussels, Belgium on April 13, 2017.  

The non-binding Arrangement will facilitate trade in wine by encouraging the exchange of information and cooperation on wine-related issues.  Under the Arrangement, WWTG countries will coordinate action to curb the growth of wine counterfeiting around the world.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) today issued a letter to signatories of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (“TPP”) that the United States has formally withdrawn from the agreement per guidance from the President of the United States. The letter emphasizes the commitment of the United States to free and fair trade, and encourages future discussions on “measures designed to promote more efficient markets and higher levels of economic growth.”

On February 12, 2015, Chinese Taipei requested consultations with Indonesia regarding a safeguard measure imposed by Indonesia on imports of certain flat-rolled iron or steel products and the investigation and determinations leading thereto.  On June 1, 2015, Viet Nam requested consultations with Indonesia regarding a safeguard measure imposed by Indonesia on imports of certain flat-rolled iron or steel products and the investigation and determinations leading thereto.

Chinese Taipei and Viet Nam each claim that the measures are inconsistent with:

On October 16, 2014, Brazil requested consultations with Indonesia concerning certain measures imposed by Indonesia on the importation of meat from fowls of the species Gallus domesticus and products from fowls of the species Gallus domesticus.

Brazil claims that the measures are inconsistent with:

* Articles 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.5, 5.6, 8 and Annex C of the SPS Agreement;

* Articles 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 5.1 and 5.2 of the TBT Agreement;

* Articles 4.2 and 14 of the Agreement on Agriculture;

On October 15, 2014, Canada requested consultations with China with respect to China's measures imposing antidumping duties on imports of cellulose pulp from Canada, as set forth in the Ministry of Commerce of China Notice No. 75 of 2013 (November 6, 2013), including its annex (the Preliminary Determination), and Notice No. 18 of 2014 (April 4, 2014), including its annex (the Final Determination).

Canada claims that the measures are inconsistent with:

•Articles 1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5; and

•Article VI of the GATT 1994.

As U.S. negotiators press forward to complete a high-standard trade agreement that levels the playing field for U.S. workers and businesses in Asia-Pacific trade, Ambassador Froman set the stage for a deeper level of engagement with these and other stakeholders in the weeks and months ahead.
