Readout of Ambassador Katherine Tai’s Meeting with Ministers from CARICOM Member States

GEORGETOWN – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai met with Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd and Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Trade and Industry and Chair of the Council for Trade and Economic Development of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Paula Gopee-Scoon on Friday, August 2, 2024.  CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Wayne McCook also joined the meeting.

Ambassador Tai underscored the United States’ commitment to continue working with Caribbean partners to expand economic opportunities, including through the Caribbean Basin Initiative and the United States-CARICOM Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.

During the meeting, Ambassador Tai emphasized the importance of inclusive trade and sustainable economic development.  The Ministers discussed opportunities for the United States and CARICOM to work together to generate long-term, equitable economic prosperity for all of our communities, including those that have been historically underserved and overlooked.

Ambassador Tai, Minister Todd, and Minister Gopee-Scoon agreed to continue to work together on these matters and other shared priorities to further strengthen the U.S.-Caribbean trade and economic relationship.
