WASHINGTON – Deputy United States Trade Representative Jayme White today held a virtual meeting with Canada’s Deputy Minister of International Trade, David Morrison, ahead of the first United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) Deputies Meeting.
Ambassador White and Deputy Minister Morrison began by emphasizing the close relationship between the United States and Canada. They expressed their commitment to fully implementing the USMCA and ensuring that trade advances equity and opportunity in North America. Ambassador White and Deputy Minister Morrison committed to work together to address their shared goals of addressing the climate crisis, combatting forced labor, and countering non-market practices.
Ambassador White stressed the importance of Canada fully meeting its USMCA commitments, including its allocation of dairy tariff-rate quotas and home-shopping. Additionally, Ambassador White expressed concern about Canada’s proposed digital service tax. They also discussed bilateral steel trade. The two agreed to continue to collaborate on addressing these and other issues, and to maintain an open line of communication.
