Readout of Ambassador Jayme White's Virtual Meeting with Mexico's Under Secretary of Economy, Luz Maria de la Mora

WASHINGTON – Deputy United States Trade Representative Jayme White today held a virtual meeting with Mexico’s Under Secretary for International Trade, Luz Maria de la Mora, on the eve of the first Deputies meeting of the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA), hosted virtually by Mexico.
 
Ambassador White and Under Secretary De la Mora began by noting the importance of the economic and trade relationship between the United States and Mexico.  They also discussed the opportunity under the USMCA for North America to lead the global effort to combat forced labor. Ambassador White stressed the need for Mexico to fully implement the Agreement’s prohibition on the importation of goods produced with forced labor.
 
Ambassador White emphasized the importance of additional priority areas, including effective fisheries management and marine species conservation; energy policies that promote fair competition and renewable energy production to combat climate change. Ambassador White also highlighted science- and risk-based regulatory approaches in agriculture, and the approval of agricultural biotechnology products that can help farmers meet sustainable production goals; enhanced trade facilitation efforts; market access for U.S. electronic payment service suppliers in Mexico; and competition in Mexico’s telecommunications sector. Ambassador White and Under Secretary De la Mora concluded by sharing expectations for a robust Deputies meeting and committed to remaining in regular communication.
