WASHINGTON – Ambassador Katherine Tai today released the following statement to commemorate Juneteenth:
“Today marks 156 years since federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, to ensure enslaved people were freed. On this day, we commemorate the emancipation of all those who were once held in bondage in our country. We must also acknowledge that the struggle for true equality continues. On Thursday, President Biden took an important step by making Juneteenth a federal holiday, officially recognizing the significance of this day in American history.
“We know there is still work left to do, and the principles of Juneteenth should inspire us to continue fighting for increased economic opportunity and justice for African Americans. We need to invest in, and lift up, communities that have been historically overlooked and underserved. By giving these communities a seat at the table, we will develop an inclusive and equitable trade policy that works for all Americans.”
