BRUSSELS – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with a group of environment NGOs based in the European Union. Attendees included representatives of E3G, European Environmental Bureau, Client Earth, and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Ambassador Tai emphasized the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis and the President’s vision for pursuing a worker-centered trade policy that promotes a race to the top on environmental sustainability. The group discussed the importance of using the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) to deepen transatlantic commitment on climate change and exchanged views on various ways in which the United States and the EU can constructively collaborate on making trade initiatives more supportive of environmental objectives. They also discussed other environmental priorities, including carbon border adjustment mechanisms, environmentally resilient supply chains, and the WTO fisheries subsidies negotiations.
Finally, Ambassador Tai recognized the disparate impacts of the climate crisis on communities of color, the importance of consulting environmental stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic, and the pursuit of environmental justice through trade policy.
