WASHINGTON – Deputy United States Trade Representative Jayme White today met with Bernd Lange, the chair of the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament (EP), and five other Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who serve on the Committee: Danuta Hübner, Liesje Schreinemacher, Hervé Juvin, Dominik Tarczyński, and Helmut Scholz. Ambassador Katherine Tai joined the start of the discussion.
Ambassador White, and the visiting EP delegation emphasized the collaborative nature of the U.S.-EU trading relationship, most recently demonstrated by the October 31 U.S.-EU agreement on steel and aluminum. They acknowledged that the framework allows for the resumption of duty-free imports of European steel and aluminum into the United States in line with historical trade flows, rebalances tariffs on U.S. goods, creates the first carbon-based arrangement that will lead to reduced emissions in the sectors and tackles global overcapacity.
They also discussed the efforts the United States and the EU are pursuing, separately and jointly, to respond more effectively to harmful non-market economy policies and the role U.S. – EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) can play in strengthening those efforts. The two sides also exchanged views on the contribution that trade policy can make to climate mitigation and on the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in December.
