Readout of Ambassador Tai’s Meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Hagiuda Koichi

TOKYO – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Hagiuda Koichi to affirm the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship and the United States’ commitment to working with allies and partners to address regional and global challenges. 
 
Ambassador Tai highlighted President Biden’s vision for creating an Indo-Pacific economic framework to guide our engagement in the region and the need to create sustainable, resilient, inclusive and competitive trade policies that achieve broad based prosperity. She emphasized a desire to partner with Japan across many important areas, including in areas such as labor, trade facilitation, the digital economy, and supply chain resiliency.
 
Ambassador Tai and Minister Hagiuda also discussed the shared challenges including global excess capacity in steel and aluminum and committed to deepening bilateral cooperation to meet these challenges. They agreed to join with other partners in this effort looked forward to a successful 12th Ministerial Conference meeting of the World Trade Organization later this month.
